Patience and persistence, not position, at Vegas

Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a 1.5 mile tri-oval with a bit of banking. Qualifying position doesn’t matter much here for the drivers anyway (I’d like to get a few points on my fantasy team, thank you!). Drivers often come from the back to win so it is more important to see who practices well than to see who is fastest in qualifying.

The calm, cool and collected like Matt Kenseth, Jeff Burton and Mark Martin are notables to watch. And of course Jimmy Johnson and Carl Edwards … and blowing the patience theory out the window is Kyle Busch, who can just plain drive! Rousch and Hendrick racing traditionally have been the big winners here. Click here for some great stats.

The gambling odds (well, it is Vegas!) all go something like this: Johnson; Edwards; Kyle Busch; Hamlin, Jeff Gordon. MGM Resorts goes out on a limb and adds Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick. They have Harvick at 13-2 and Tony at 7-1.Perhaps they saw Tony driving that Lucky Cab Wednesday. Check out the photos here.

Since early “impatience” seems to be dominating the spirit of the season thus far, I guess anything can happen in Vegas. And in the case of NASCAR what happens in Vegas won’t stay in Vegas it will just continue in spades at Bristol.
